Jeff Morang is a seasoned Human Factors Engineer (HFE) with nearly 20 years of experience in healthcare, aerospace, and defense. He holds a Master of Science in Human Factors & Ergonomics from San Jose State University and a Bachelor's in Emerging Technologies from the University of Connecticut.
Throughout his career, Jeff has led various HFE activities for design & development, design enhancement, and/or process improvement to ensure both user needs & requirements as well as appropriate risk control measures are achieved to meet regulatory requirements for a wide range of medical devices. His expertise spans surgical-assisted robotics, point-of-care and central lab diagnostics, neuromodulation stimulators, diabetes care, instructional design for cognitively impaired patients, and non-invasive traumatic brain injury devices. Jeff's work in process improvement and risk control measures in operating theaters, sterile processing, intensive care units, and military/combat medical support, as well as drug-device combination products, underscores his comprehensive approach to Human Factors Engineering. His leadership ensures that products are not only innovative and effective but also safe and user-friendly.
Recently, as Director of Human Factors Engineering at BlackHägen Design, he led an HFE team partnering with clients to fulfill various HFE needs and activities for Class II and III medical devices; from conducting upfront, early user/design research and drafting appropriate HFE design inputs for Design Controls to providing expertise for implementing design-related risk control measures, conducting usability evaluations, and providing expert advice for design enhancements. Jeff has made lasting impressions at previous tenures by engaging and collaborating with stakeholders and/or clients to either lead HFE efforts for strategic flagship programs or spearheading internal continuous improvement initiatives for achieving long-term, strategic goals.
Jeff is an active member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Human Factors Committee. He has contributed to ANSI/AAMI HE75 and co-authored "Applied Human Factors in Medical Device Design.
Bartosz, a Founding Partner and the Head of Design at Stratus, brings over 20 years of professional experience in consumer and medical design product development. Beginning his career in Northern California, he specialized in designing lifestyle products, consumer electronics, and household appliances for esteemed clients such as Samsung, LG, Iriver, Mattel, Epson, Fila, Haier, Virgin Mobile, and others.
He has grown to recognize that few designs have as profound an impact on people's lives as medical devices and redirected his career path to focus on developing medical and mission-critical products at BlackHägen Design. Employing an effective user-centered approach to problem-solving, conceptual development, and aesthetic branding, Bartosz has spearheaded design initiatives for leading medical companies including Philips, Medtronic, Stryker, Bayer, Olympus, BD, Terumo, Smith & Nephew, ResMed, and many others.
His passion is to achieve excellence in medical design, rooted in principles of user-centric ethnographic research and evaluative methodology, while drawing on the insights and aesthetic sensitivity he has gained working in consumer product development.
Bartosz’s key strengths lie in advanced problem-solving, applied to conceptual thinking, research analysis, and aesthetic solutions. Fluent in German and Polish, he actively participates in global usability studies and conducts qualitative and quantitative research data analysis to uncover design opportunities and drive product requirements.
Jesse Knight is a Founder of Stratus Design and a seasoned mechanical engineer with over 18 years of experience in the field. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Walla Walla University. Jesse has specialized in early-stage product development, particularly within medical devices and other regulated industries. His expertise lies in mechanical design and analysis, enabling him to transform innovative ideas into tangible products.
Jesse has a proven track record in the mechanical and systems design of a wide range of products, including commercial, industrial, and medical equipment. His experience spans research, prototype testing, manufacturing setup, risk management, and quality assurance. He has successfully managed multiple R&D programs through to production release, including offshore manufacturing.
Throughout his career, Jesse has focused on design for manufacturability, materials and process selection, design verification, design validation, and risk management. His work has been instrumental in bringing several groundbreaking medical devices to market, showcasing his proficiency in both design and regulatory requirements.
